Summary of the course

 

This course is aimed at those working at all levels in a wide range of settings. 

 

This course introduces the important area of safeguarding individuals from abuse. 

The course teaches learners how to identify different types of abuse, and the signs and symptoms that might indicate abuse is occurring. 

 

Learners are taught how to considers when individuals might be particularly vulnerable to abuse and the factors that may contribute to vulnerability in individuals.  

 

The course teaches learners the actions to take in cases of suspected and alleged abuse, and the national policies and local systems, which are part of the safeguarding framework. 

 

The roles of various relevant agencies are considered, together with sources of information and advice about the learner’s own role. 

 

Unsafe practices that may affect the wellbeing of individuals who use the services, together with sources of information and advice about own role in safeguarding and protecting individuals will be explored. 

 

Learners will also consider those practices which may reduce the likelihood of abuse occurring.

  2. Definition the different types of abuse, such as; Physical abuse, Sexual abuse; Emotional/psychological abuse; Financial abuse; Institutional abuse; Self-neglect; Neglect by others, and other types of abuse   
  3. The signs and/or symptoms associated with each type of abuse 
  4. Factors that may contribute to an individual being more vulnerable to abuse 
  5. The actions to take if there are suspicions that an individual is being abused 
  6. The actions to take if an individual alleges that they are being abused 
  7. Ways to ensure that evidence of abuse is preserved 
  8. The national and local context of safeguarding and protection from abuse
  9. National policies and local systems that relate to safeguarding and protection from abuse 
  10. The roles of different agencies in safeguarding and protecting individuals from abuse 
  11. Reports into serious failures to protect individuals from abuse 
  12. Sources of information and advice about own role in safeguarding and protecting individuals from abuse 
  13. Ways to reduce the likelihood of abuse 
  14. How the likelihood of abuse may be reduced 
  15. The importance of an accessible complaints procedure for reducing the likelihood of abuse 
  16. How to recognise and report unsafe practices 
  17. Unsafe practices that may affect the well-being of individuals 
  18. The actions to take if unsafe practices have been identified 
  19. The action to take if suspected abuse or unsafe practices have been reported but nothing has been done in response
